How Do I Begin Again Without Dragging the Past With Me?

How Do I Begin Again Without Dragging the Past With Me?

January 20, 20262 min read

As a new year opens, I see a blank canvas, no lines to stay within, no smudges to conceal, only unclaimed possibility.

Yet many of us arrive at this fresh threshold carrying yesterday’s brushstrokes, old expectations, familiar stories, survival habits. We end up repainting a life that no longer fits.

What if January isn’t for frantic plans, but for sitting with the unknown and gently listening for what wants to emerge, shaping the year with intention and curiosity, instead of past conditioning?

When we grip expectations and 'shoulds,' especially those built on old narratives, we become reactive and rigid, missing unexpected opportunities andthequiet magic in the mess.

This season invites you to hold lightly and release what’s not yours to carry:

  • outdated stories

  • the endless noise of “should.”

  • the exhausting need to do more

  • the urge to fix or rescue everyone

As Byron Katie wisely notes, “There are only three kinds of business: my business, your business, and God’s business.” Staying in our own business keeps us grounded in who we are and who we wish to become.

A gentle reframe for the year

My intention this year is simple: to return to my core self again and again, to let go of the past, breathe into the present, and trust that what I need is already within.

A tiny awareness practice to begin again

Stop. Be still. Feel your feet on the ground. Let your breath be natural.
Notice what is present, sensations in the body, feelings, thoughts, impulses, simply notice without judgment or fixing.

If it helps, you might name them, sensation… feeling… thought…. For change starts with awareness, and this bare awareness softens urgency and returns us to choice, so we can consciously respond rather than react.

From here, you may choose to respectfully release what’s not yours to carry, the thoughts, roles, and responsibilities that no longer serve your becoming. Often all that’s needed is to notice, name, and gently let go.

Why this matters

Our attention is easily pulled outward, making us lose touch with our heart and disconnect from purpose. When we re-align mind and heart, attention returns to what matters most and in this alignment, intention sets the direction, and attention brings it to life. Holding onto old stories scatters our attention; letting go allows intention and attention to move as one. Then, we begin to live from the inside out, and a truer life quietly takes shape.

Begin again.

If you notice your hands gripping the steering wheel of life, you may like to loosen your grip, lean back, notice, and then choose what you want to meet.

Open a fresh page and allow the first stroke to find you.

Begin again.

Be your inspiration.
