January always feels like an open invitation to start afresh, doesn’t it? There’s something about the energy of a new year that highlights possibility, potential, and the dream of what could be. But before we rush into what’s next, I want to pause with you for a moment and consider the power of starting the year with gratitude for what already exists.
Science has shown that expressing gratitude can rewire our brains. When we focus on the positive, our brains release dopamine and serotonin, those feel-good neurotransmitters that shift our mood, lift our spirit, and expand our perspective. Gratitude helps us see abundance where we might have seen lack.
This time of year is a wonderful opportunity to check in and notice: What in your life is working for you? What people, experiences, or qualities are you truly grateful for? I’ve found that acknowledging the goodness already present brings clarity and confidence to take bolder steps.
Then, I like to set clear intentions. While it’s common to focus on goals, I want to invite you to consider why intentions should come first.
Intentions and goals are different, yet complementary. Intentions are guiding principles that inform your actions and decisions, they set the tone for your life. Goals, on the other hand, are specific, measurable outcomes you aim to achieve within a timeframe. Where goals provide a destination, intentions act as your internal compass, pointing you toward what is possible and meaningful.
Intentions lay the groundwork. They offer clarity, direction, and alignment with your purpose and values, creating the foundation upon which your goals can naturally evolve. Without intentions, goals can feel hollow or misaligned, leading to outcomes that don’t truly serve your deeper desires.
So let’s start by reflecting on how you want to feel, what qualities you want to embody, and what purpose and values you want to live by. When goals follow intentions, they stop feeling like demands and become expressions of your deeper values.
Let’s plant the seeds:
- Begin with gratitude. What are you thankful for in this moment? List everything that comes to mind, from the big to the seemingly small.
- Reflect on how you want to show up, calm, courageous, connected, joyful, energised, confident, loving? What resonates most with your heart?
- Craft one or two intentions based on these reflections.
- Then set your goals to support your intentions.
This process is not about abandoning ambition but about grounding it in what truly matters. Goals born from intention are more likely to feel authentic and fulfilling because they arise from who you are, not who you think you “should” be.
As we step into this new year, may your intentions guide you toward a life aligned with your heart and purpose.
